Damon Albarn - Mali Music

Coincidentally my spinning wheel gave me another Mali record right after Ali farka Touré. But this is a very special one. In collaboration with Afel Bocoum and Toumani Diabaté, Damon Albarn, leader of Blur and Gorillaz is following the footsteps of Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, Stewart Copeland and David Byrne, traveling through Africa and recording source material. To bring that metrial home into a professional studio, adding guitars, keyboards, percussion and effects.
The result is a wonderful mix and a beautiful record.

Th clip I chose is not a record version, but Damon Albarn jamming 'Bamako' live in Mali. And that clip is so funny in it's way for the big contrast, twice, between Africa and 'the modern world'. Can you imagine these people wearing golden teeth, big golden chains, driving a big open limousine with at least 12 sexy girls? In stead the vocals are done by a guy that is wearing the cheapest clothes possible. You see flies crawling over the toe slippers (or whatever those are called).

But what really makes it funny is the difference between Albarn and the African musicians. They are all relaxed playing their music, singing, but the way Albarn moves at the speed of modern society makes it look almost as if he is re-recorded at double speed compared to the other guys.

Beautiful music, that's for sure.
