Dr. Sir Warrior & his Oriental Brothers International Band Original - Ndi Ji Ego

Well known Nigerian Band, fine Highlife music. Living on a tropical Caribbean island, where the people are always referring to the past and the slavery I always wonder why they are so full of themselves their view on history hardly ever goes beyond the moment in time when the slaves arrived, why and who was responsible for that. But hardly ever about where they actually came from (except for a couple of historians and the occasional university student). That part of history seems to be so traumatizing that they are not able to see any further historical roots or simple are not interested.

With the music it is just the same. Or even worse. Very very few people are busy with conserving the local musical traditions and produced work. It is just now that a couple of people are setting up a website were they will make digitized recordings available and gathering those (also because most records are not available anymore but it is very very hard to find any of those online worldwide).

But when it comes to the roots of the music.... well the very same thing. I am sure there must be some people interested in what way Caribbean music was and/or is still influenced by African (and Latin) traditions and from which countries, but if there are, there are probably listening to music all day long, like me  so i never met one so far.

Listening to this Highlife music from Nigeria you can however clearly hear the Caribbean sound in it. I even hear Tumba. And since it is very unlikely that Dr Sir Warrior was influenced by local bands such as Double R, I'd say it must be the other way around.
