Born from an Egba-Yoruba background Ebenezer Obey started his career in the mid fifties and formed his first band (The International Brothers) in 1964. In the seventies the band was renamed to Inter Reformers Band.
Ebenezer Obey makes Juju music. Juju music is strongly based on Yoruba traditions and the most important instrument is the lya llu, the talking drum, so it is no wonder the music passes on a message. In Obey's case that would be Christian spirituality and the Reformers did a lot of praise singing for Nigerian tycoons. But in general Juju became popular urban dance music based on old traditions.Obey however stayed on the spiritual Christian side and he had a good extra reason to do so. In 1963 he married Julian Olaide Olufade, better known as Lady Evangelist Julian Obey-Fabiyi.
