Calixto Ochoa is one of the best performers of Colombian Cumbia (and some other minor styles like porro and paseo). Like many fusion styles cumbia tells a story and is a cultural tradition. It originates from the Caribbean coast of Colombia and Panama and is a fusion between music brought by African Slaves and native inhabitants. It is popular throughout most of Latin America. There is also a trick how to recognize a cumbia rhythm: if the rhythm is the same as riding a horse it is a cumbia :-)
Really awesome record sleeve by the way, so typical for productions from Latin America in the 70's and 80's: you put a woman on it in a teasing pose, preferably a blond and sell more records, lmao. I actually wonder if it made any difference at all! I would have the feeling: okay this just can't be good music, no way! Cheap stuff, instrumental copies or something like that.
