Hip Hop Essentials - Vol. 2

Part 2 of this great series of old school hip hop classics.
And again this CD contains really important songs. Like "Rebel Without a Pause" from Public Enemy, which was a real change of direction and opened up more ways of creativity. But do not underestimate the strength of the lyrics in those days. "Be a Father to Your Child" from Ed O.G. & da Bulldogs is a good example. Hip Hop back in those days was merely about describing the misery black people had to deal with (Grandmaster Flash), partying (Sugar Hill Gang), ladies expressing men do not rule the world (Salt 'n Peppa) or men being macho (Biz Markie).

To be confronted with a message such as be a father to your child, really made a difference. All of a sudden rappers started to use songs to spread a positive view, telling you to change things in your life. And in the suburbs filled with Afro Americans people really did start to think about things. After all these were the guys and girls from their neighborhood.
