La Sonora Matancera were actually a band that joined up with like every great famous singer from the Latin island region: Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
This is a 1950 album, but Daniel Santos, born as a poor kid in Puerto Rico started his career mid thirties. Don't underestimate this guy, he was one of the most famous singers ever, also went to New York, were there was a big Latin scene back then and impressed a lot of people. Then he had to join the army, went back to the islands after and spend a lot of time in Cuba.
Being a believer at first, he later turned his back on the political movement, merely because he did not want to stand for training children to fight in the army.
