Alton Ellis - Sunday Coming

1995 release of this important 1970 reggae album. Alton Ellis was one of the big Jamaican reggae stars before Bob Marley came along. He started his musical career when reggae in Jamaica was still ska based. After winning a talent show he teamed up with Eddie Perkins, but after some success Perkins left for the USA to start a solo career.
Back on his own. Ellis released some more soulful work, giving the singer more opportunities to work and stretch the voice. Some say he actually recorded the first rocksteady single.

Soon rocksteady became the most popular Jamaican reggae style and Ellis was one of the big stars until Bob Marley and his Wailers took over.
