Nazakat & Salamat Ali Khan - Raga Dabari Kanarra

Live recording from 1970 released by the World Network Series. This may not be your every day music, but you should see this both as music and anthropology. Because this style of Dhrupad and Khyal singing has a 500 year old cultural tradition.

Personally I am not very touched by the voices of these two Pakistani brothers, but there is a reason for releasing this recording, made in Cologne and that is because Salamat is responsible for the revival of Dhrupad singing by bringing in Khyal. Khyal means imagination in Hindi and you can compare it with what freestyle or scat is to jazz music. This way of singing is similar to Qawwali (Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan for instance). Troubadour music, so to speak.

If you collect world music or you are really into classic Indian music traditions this is a must have, although it may never be your favorite record.
