Pucho & His Latin Soul Brothers - Heat!/Jungle Fire!

Re-release from 1995 of two records: Heat! (1968) and Jungle Fire (1970). Kind of a funny mix, because the first record is way more international influenced with versions of famous songs like "Georgia On My Mind" and I Can't Stop Loving You", while the other record is really Latin Jazz. I prefer the latter, but of course that is subjective.

This may be a Latin (soul) jazz band, but in fact Pucho is not even latin, he is an Afro American that played for several years in the band of pianist Joe Panama to start his own band when that band fell apart. Always playing very danceable music, he was lesser known than some other great Latin jazz bands in his time, but then again, he had an eye for talent. Hot shots like Willie Bobo and Mongo Santamaria got several musicians from his band and to give you an idea of the talent... one of the musicians that Mongo recruited out of Pucho's band was the young Chick Corea...
